Can Car Scratches Be Buffed Out, or Do They Need Paint?

Can Car Scratches Be Buffed Out, or Do They Need Paint? illustration

Scratches that stay in the clear coat can usually be polished out. Scratches that reach the color or primer need paint. The fingernail test sorts them: if your nail does not catch, polishing may work, and if it catches, the scratch goes deeper.

Key takeaways

  • No catch means clear coat only.
  • A white or grey line means primer is showing.
  • Polishing removes a thin layer, so it has limits.

Run your fingernail across it

Clean the area, then drag a fingernail across the scratch at a right angle. If the nail slides over, the scratch is shallow. If it snags, the scratch cuts through. Water also helps: if the scratch disappears when wet, it is probably clear coat only.

What polishing does

A polish uses fine abrasives to level the clear coat around the scratch. Light is no longer scattered, so the scratch seems to vanish. The process removes a very thin layer of clear coat. Repeated polishing can wear through, so it is not a repeat fix.

Colors and what they tell you

If the scratch is the same color as your paint, it is in the color layer. If you see white or grey, it has reached primer. If you see silver, it has reached metal, and rust can start within days to weeks. Deep scratches need sanding, primer, color and clear coat.

When touch-up pens help

A pen can seal a deep chip and slow rust. It does not make the chip invisible. Use it on small chips, not on long scratches.
